How to Spot People Still Stuck in the Game
Let’s be honest,
One of the hardest parts of re-entry isn’t the job hunt or the fines – it’s realizing that some of the people you used to run with are still running scams.
A few months after home confinement ended, an old “friend” called: “Hey Joe, got a quick side thing – easy money, no risk.” I hung up, blocked the number, and prayed I’d never see his name pop up again.
You can’t change them, but you can change who you let close.
Recognize the red flags early
They talk more about “opportunities” than real jobs. They drop “you still know how to…” They want to meet in private spots. Trust your radar.
Set quiet, firm boundaries
“I’m staying clean and focused on my family/job/probation right now – can’t get into that.” Say it once. No debate.
Create distance and fill the gap
Block numbers. Unfollow quietly. Replace old contacts with a reentry group, a church meeting, a job-training class — people building forward, not looking back.
Walking away isn’t weak. It’s wise.
